Malaria-Free Safaris

Cape Town, Winelands & the Garden Route — No Prophylaxis Required

Not every corner of Africa carries malaria risk, and it's worth being precise about which does, since the honest answer shapes where we'd actually route you. Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, and Kruger/Sabi Sand in South Africa all sit in malaria zones — antimalarial medication is generally recommended there. Cape Town, the Cape Winelands, and the Garden Route do not, and form a genuinely excellent, malaria-free trip in their own right.

South Africa (Cape Town, Winelands, Garden Route)

We say this plainly because a lot of travel content blurs it: a 'malaria-free safari' in the classic Big Five sense — Kruger, the Mara, the Serengeti — largely doesn't exist. Kruger National Park and the private reserves bordering it (including Sabi Sand) sit within a designated malaria area, particularly in the wetter summer months. If Big Five viewing in a malaria zone is off the table for you, the honest alternative isn't a disguised version of the same trip — it's a different itinerary entirely.

That itinerary is South Africa's southern circuit. Cape Town offers Table Mountain, the Cape Peninsula, world-class dining, and Boulders Beach's penguin colony. The Cape Winelands — Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Paarl — sit forty-five minutes away and rank among the world's great wine regions. The Garden Route threads dramatic coastline, indigenous forest, and whale watching (June–November) along a scenic 300km drive between Mossel Bay and Storms River. None of it carries malaria risk, and all of it is genuinely worth visiting on its own merits, not as a consolation prize.

For travellers who still want a Big Five element without malaria risk, some private reserves in South Africa's Eastern Cape (outside our current itinerary set) are malaria-free year-round, since they sit outside the malaria belt entirely — worth discussing with us directly if this matters to your decision, as availability and fit vary trip to trip.

This page is general travel-planning information, not medical advice. Malaria risk varies by season and changes over time; always confirm current guidance with a travel health clinic or your doctor 4–6 weeks before departure, regardless of which itinerary you choose.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Kruger National Park malaria-free?

+

No — Kruger and the private reserves bordering it, including Sabi Sand, sit within a designated malaria area, with higher risk in the warmer, wetter summer months (October–April). Antimalarial medication is generally recommended for these areas year-round.

Which parts of South Africa are actually malaria-free?

+

Cape Town, the Cape Winelands, and the Garden Route are malaria-free, along with most of the Western Cape generally. Some private reserves in the Eastern Cape are also malaria-free, since they sit outside the malaria belt — ask us directly if a Big Five element matters to you.

Can I get a Big Five safari with zero malaria risk?

+

Within our current itinerary set, not on the classic Kruger or East African routes — those areas carry risk. Certain Eastern Cape private reserves in South Africa are a genuine malaria-free Big Five option; they sit outside our standard itineraries but we're happy to discuss them if this is a firm requirement.

Is this page medical advice?

+

No — it's general travel-planning information based on how malaria zones are commonly categorised. Risk levels can vary by season and change over time. Always confirm current guidance with a travel health clinic or your own doctor before departure.
