Volcanoes National Park
Volcanoes National Park protects 160 kmΒ² of Rwandan territory across the Virunga Massif β five of the range's eight volcanoes, rising from bamboo forest at 2,400m to the glaciated peak of Karisimbi at 4,507m. It's home to 12 habituated mountain gorilla families and is where primatologist Dian Fossey conducted the research, later dramatised in Gorillas in the Mist, that helped save the species from likely extinction.
Rwanda's trekking infrastructure here is widely considered the most polished in the region: well-maintained roads to the park headquarters at Kinigi, briefings that run with notable efficiency, and trails through bamboo and hagenia woodland that, while still a genuine hike, are generally gentler than Bwindi's steeper, denser terrain across the border in Uganda.
Alongside gorillas, the park holds a population of golden monkeys β a strikingly coloured, highly endangered species found only in the Virunga and Bwindi ecosystems. A golden monkey trek is shorter and less strenuous than a gorilla trek, usually under an hour of walking, and pairs well as a lower-intensity second activity on a multi-day stay.
For travellers wanting more than wildlife, the park offers volcano hikes: Bisoke (3,711m) can be summited and back in a single demanding day, rewarding climbers with a crater lake at the top; Karisimbi requires an overnight camp partway up and a genuinely serious two-day trek. Neither is required to see the gorillas, but both are popular add-ons for fitter, more adventurous travellers.
The park's proximity to Kigali β a comfortable 2.5-hour drive β is what makes Rwanda's gorilla trekking logistically the simplest in the region. There's no equivalent to Uganda's 8-hour road transfer to Bwindi; you can realistically fly into Kigali, trek two days later, and be home within a week.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Rwanda's gorilla permit so much more expensive than Uganda's?
+
At USD 1,500 versus Uganda's USD 800, the price reflects Rwanda's positioning as the premium, more accessible option β shorter transfers, more polished infrastructure, and higher-end lodges β plus a portion that funds Rwanda's broader conservation and community programmes.
Can I do a volcano hike and gorilla trekking on the same trip?
+
Yes, but not on the same day β each is a separate full-day activity with its own permit. A 4-night stay comfortably fits one gorilla trek plus a Bisoke day-hike or golden monkey trek as a second activity.
What is golden monkey tracking?
+
A shorter, gentler trek (usually under an hour of walking) to see golden monkeys β a highly endangered species found only in the Virunga and Bwindi ecosystems, known for their strikingly orange-gold colouring. It's a good lower-intensity pairing with a gorilla trek on a multi-day stay.
How close is Volcanoes National Park to Kigali?
+
About 2.5 hours by road β meaningfully shorter than the equivalent Uganda transfer to Bwindi, which is part of why Rwanda has become the faster, more streamlined gorilla-trekking option in the region.
